possible to have a "team error"?

Post by gbm47 » Mon Mar 25, 2013 6:44 pm

Have situation where two outfielders let ball drop between them when one of them could of caught it. Is it possible to assign a team error versus assigning an error to one and not the other?

A ball dropping between two players would not be an error. You do not score an error for a mental mistake. As odd as it sounds, this should likely be scored as a base hit.

They were both there in time to catch it and under the fly ball but no one called and both thought the other one would catch it and both backed off and it fell to the ground.

It was a typical routine fly ball. My problem is that it was definately an error not a hit but who gets the error. As I understand it in situations like this it would be a "team error" but I cant figure out how to assign a team error.

In NFHS case book-
9.5.5 SITUATION B:

B1 hits a pop-up behind second base that could easily be caught by either F4 or F6. The ball is not caught.

RULING: Since the ball could have been caught, it is a team error and is not a hit.

This is far from official (I couldnt find the exact situation referenced in mlb rules)...

http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Error" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Non Errors

Not all misplays result in an error. Errors in judgment are not usually counted as errors. For example, if, because of confusion or miscommunication, a fly ball that is easily catchable falls between two fielders without either of them touching the ball, no error is charged, as it is impossible to determine who is the guilty party.
As you pointed out, your league rule makes it pretty clear that it should be.

Yeah, according to official high school rules, situation calls for "team error". Perhaps this needs to be added in the "misc." section of the scoring tabs.

You can create a player called "Team" and use Misc -> Assign Error, and assign the error to the team. You would have to temporarily put "Team" in a position to do this.
