Scoring Coach-Pitch Games

Post by SupraxM » Thu Aug 23, 2012 2:42 pm

Do you have any suggestions on how to score coach-pitch games?? Our league has the coach pitch 3 innings and then the kids pitch the last 3 innings. I am having issues with the player that is fielding the pitching position during the coach-pitch innings appearing in the pitching stats and absorbing the coach's pitches as his own. The only reason that I need the pitcher in the position is in case he makes a defensive play. Any suggestions??

We have a similar issue with my son's league except that we use a pitching machine for three innings. I just don't track ball/strikes during that time for the offense. Just hit "In Play" or "Out" based on the batter-runner's performance.

I made a decision that at 8 years old, I really don't care what the count was when they got their hit or out. And, given a season of 8 year old pitching, I'm not sure I should have tracked their pitching...in the end it's still really about learning the fundamentals.

If its really that critical to track the defensive plays at the pitcher position (find it hard to believe it would be), you can have a dummy player named "Coach" at pitcher, then if there is a play to the pitcher, you substitute that player in before recording the play, then substitute "Coach" back.

You could always take note of the pitch count totals at the end of the 3rd inning and manually subtract them from the stats for the kids later.
