Scoring Question

Post by barkmo » Fri May 29, 2009 6:28 pm

Runner at first is hit by batted ball. He is out, hit by ball. What happens to the batter? I know it's not a hit. How is his AB recorded?

It is scorer's discretion in this case. If as the scorer, you believe it would have been a base hit had it not hit the runner, you would score it as a single. If you believe a fielder would have fielded the ball, you mark it as a Fielder's Choice on the batter.

In this case, does iScore give the putout to the nearest fielder, which is correct, I believe, per MLB scoring rules? This is only an issue if/when fielding stats are kept, of course ...

If the play is scored as Out at Second, Hit by Ball the PO is given to the second baseman. If the play is scored as Out at Third, Hit by Ball the PO is given to the third baseman. If the play is scored as Out at Home, Hit by Ball the PO is given to the catcher.

Hi FTM -

A minor point is that the out should be given to the nearest fielder which can sometimes be SS, not 1B, 2B, 3B or C. There should probably be a way to specify this for plays at 2B or 3B. Pitcher is rarely the nearest fielder (I've never seen that in a real game) but I've seen the SS be the nearest fielder several times.

Yes there are several put out scenarios that are currently handled by a best guess in order to avoid an additional burden on the person inputting the data. These include

(1) When the batter is called out on an Infield Fly that is not caught, the official scorer shall credit the putout to the fielder who the scorer believes could have made the catch;
(2) When a runner is called out for being touched by a fair ball (including an Infield Fly), the official scorer shall credit the putout to the fielder nearest the ball;
(3) When a runner is called out for running out of line to avoid being tagged, the official scorer shall credit the putout to the fielder whom the runner avoided;
(4) When a runner is called out for passing another runner, the official scorer shall credit the putout to the fielder nearest the point of passing;
(5) When a runner is called out for running the bases in reverse order, the official scorer shall credit the putout to the fielder covering the base the runner left in starting his reverse run;
(6) When a runner is called out for having interfered with a fielder, the official scorer shall credit the putout to the fielder with whom the runner interfered, unless the fielder was in the act of throwing the ball when the interference occurred, in which case the official scorer shall credit the putout to the fielder for whom the throw was intended and shall credit an assist to the fielder whose throw was interfered with;

In a future release we will have an option for those who wish to use it that will ask who gets credit for the put out in plays where the scorer's judgement is required. It will be a settings checkbox that says "Ask for Judgement Putouts" and only if you have that setting selected will the interface request additional information.
