Truncated play descriptions on iscorecast pitch-by-pitch

Post by Azstorm » Tue Aug 02, 2011 4:06 pm

We received a number of questions on today's broadcast. We are at the ASA 16u National Championship and had over 20 people viewing the iscorecast broadcast. The viewers on an Apple desktop had no complaints, but those who viewed it on a Windows PC said that the play description would be complete when it was under the field icon but when the next play was logged, the text would go to the pitch-by-pitch detail and be truncated. So if someone stepped away from the broadcast and missed a couple of plays, and wanted to see what transpired on the previous plays they missed, they would scroll on the pitch-by-pitch detail and the play description in the pitch-by-pitch detail would be incomplete. This happened at the end of the game as well as the game ended on a double play and the text immediately went to the pitch-by-pitch detail and truncated the play description and indicated the game was over. We received a lot of calls from viewers asking what happened? What can we do to get the pitch-by-pitch detail to reflect the complete text of a play and/or note in the pitch-by-pitch detail son those that miss a play can read the full text description????
It is by far the number one complaint we hear from the viewers and is very frustrating to hear the questions of what happened? Please help, are we doing something wrong?

there are two types of viewers one with flash and one html. Which player were the complaints on ... the flash version is darker and has an old fashion scoreboard look.... the html version is white background. it sounds like the concerns were on teh HTML version / white background. Can you confirm?

It was the darker background with the old time looking scoreboard.

Okay - so what should I tell our people now, just to deal with it and don't miss a play while viewing the broadcast? Or try to view the plain text viewer? It seems that iScore has code that truncates it to fit in a defined field to save space - it seems fairly straightforward since the majority of the text is system generated and not free flowing other than the notes. The programming isn't too difficult to change to accept the text in the play description and copy it into the pitch-by-pitch detail without a character limit.

So many of our viewers love the software but say this is the biggest disappointment!! As a scorekeeper, I can't tell you how many times people say they are frustrated and wonder if I am doing something wrong. Isn't there anything that can be done for a short term fix?

Most of the problems discussed here on this forum are user error or training issues but this particular situation is a correctable system limitation that impacts the viewing experience of the user - it would seem to be a priority if it impacts the actual viewing experience. Appealing to a group of people that can help generate positive feedback in the community would be helpful to iScore in the long run. I vote to prioritize this issue in the roadmap.

Do you have more information about the environment the user is running? You say Apple users did not have complaints, but Windows users did. Do you know what version of Windows they were running? Do you know what version of Flash they have installed? It is the same Flash based application whether running on a Mac or a Windows machine, so we would not expect there to be differences. It sounds like maybe there is a bug with a particular version of Flash / Windows? If you can email us directly with an example of a game where this is happening, we can take a look. Email us at support@iscoresports.com with your Customer ID, and let us know which game we should look at. The Replay of a game would be identical to the live scorecast, so the same issue should still be present if it was there earlier today.

I sent as much of information as I could gather - hopefully we could come up with a fix.

We got it, and have actually tried a few things since receiving it last night, but nothing has worked yet. This appears to be a bug in Flash on the Windows platform with standard lists, but we are continuing trying to figure out a way around the issue. Thank you.

FTM is working on it, I assume the fix will show as an app update.
