running outside the baseline

Post by team mom » Fri Mar 25, 2011 3:41 am

We had an out last weekend where the batter ran outside the baseline to avoid getting tagged. SHe made it to first, but upon challenge the ump called her out. I did not see an out for this but there was something like "outside the box", so I used that. Does that work here or it that for something else. I guess there is always "other" as an option as well.

Interesting, there is a "left base path" out option for runners, but not batter/runner..
I would have done "other" with a note. But out of batter box plus note works too..

In this case would 1B get the put-out? I did not check at the time but seems like she should get credit.

Rule of thumb is generally fielder closest to play.. Without looking it up specifically, i would guess 1b (unless a bunt and 2b was covering) put out 1b and assist catcher...

I agree that the out should have gone to 1B. It was actually a soft grounder that she recovered and then tried to tag the batter/runner, leading to the out of base path out. I think that by selecting Out of Box, which actually refers to the batter's box, the PO was given to the catcher by iscore. Later I'll change it to "other" and see if that gives the out to 1B. Hopefully it will ask for position on the out.

Yes, the out should be attributed to the closest fielder on this and some other Out By Rules. In this case, since the out is called only if the base line is left to avoid tagging, it usually is attributed to the player trying to tag the runner or batter/runner.
