Dropped Third
Shouldn't it be scored as RoE if a batter reaches first on dropped third strike? Had this happen at an indoor tournament over the weekend and scored it this way but on the cummulative stats it didn't show up for the batter as an RoE.
Re: Dropped Third
I think it's normally considered a passed ball (or possibly a wild pitch if the batter swung at something well away from the plate) but not an error. It might be an error if the catcher threw wildly to first.
Re: Dropped Third
Agree w/ jbeckman.
And FYI iscore handles all the stats correctly (per MLB rules)... if you enter the play right for a batter who strikes out but reaches due to a dropped third strike...
By rule (MLB 10.12.e) no error is charged when batter reaches first due to passed ball or wild pitch. Statistically, When a batter reaches due to a dropped third strike, ...the pitcher gets the K, the batter gets an official at bat, a k, and a 0 for avg and obp. the catcher gets dinged with passed ball ( or pitcher gets dinged if a wild pitch). Also note.. by rule (mlb 10.16 ) the base runner who reached by passed ball if he scores will be an unearned run. While a runner who reached on wild pitch would be an earned run if he scored. Again, iscore handles all the underlying stats correctly if you enter the play correctly and choose 'dropped 3rd strike', safe, wild pitch or passed ball, as appropriate. Also if you used the swipe strike keystroke to signify strike swinging, iscore will also capture if it is Kc or Ks as appropriate.
Happy new year...

Re: Dropped Third
Thanks. Those answers make sense.
I have been told that before and forgot it but what does not make sense in the fastpitch softball world is often a 3rd strike change up will bounce before getting to the catcher. Batter swings and misses, it isn't a passed ball and not really a wild pitch. If the catcher makes a decent throw and the first basemen misses the MLB rule doesn't really compute because it was an E-3. Oh well I guess it's not a perfect world.

Re: Dropped Third
I will need to check my fast pitch sources to verify, but am certain the rule in MLB, is a pitch in the dirt or that hits home plate goes against the pitcher not the catcher ( ie a wild pitch , not a passed ball, ... Assumig it gets passed the catcher and allows a runner to advance )
(Update. I verified in my Softball rule books too.. Same story... A pitch in the dirt is wild pitch not a passed ball. A change up in the dirt if it leads to runner advancing is a wild pitch)
