Ball out of play

If you have any rules related questions, please ask in this forum. In general, enforcement of rules is up to the Umpire of the game and iScore does not specifically enforce them, but we want to make sure we score within them. Ask here, and experts can chime in.

Ball out of play

Post by Bryan D Shepherd » Fri Apr 30, 2010 2:13 pm

Here's a play for everyone that happened to me last night:

Runner on first, no outs. Batter hits a ground ball to the shortstop who throws the ball over the first baseman's head and the ball goes out of play. What's the scoring and where does everyone end up?

I assume the runners at the time of the throw, On the way to second and on the way to first.. and the aware is base plus one from time of throw right?

so 3rd and second.

I assume the shortstop would have been able to make a play at second or first, so batter reach on error E6, and advances to 2nd on the throw, ball out of play. likewise for runner going first to third?

no hit. error to shortstop.

That is correct. The right call is runners should be on second and third, although, the rules says two bases awarded. You were correct in saying that it's two bases from the time of the throw. The error is on the shortstop.

How does the iScore scorebook look for your entry? When entered this way does it show the runner on first moved to second by ABx? And then what does it show on 2nd to 3rd?

Both of them should be moved by Ball Out of Play. The batter will get first on E6.

Although the results end up being the same, technically, since this would be considered the first play after the pitch by an infielder and all runners did not advance a base prior to the throw the runners would be entiled to two bases at the time the ball was pitched and not the time of the throw. Rule 7.05(g)
