iScore for MacBook

Post by jimdesign » Fri Jan 13, 2012 8:02 pm

I really hope this hasn't been asked, I will feel like an idiot...

I have a MacBook. I had been using another scoring application, and while it worked great, there were a few features it didn't have, and it doesn't necessarily look like they will be implemented.

I have been going over the features of the iScore app, and it does look pretty extensive. I have worked as the scorekeeper for select high school basketball games, and have worked as the secondary scorekeeper during the state tournament.

This is what I would like to see in an app...

1. Full team accessibility. It's simpler to see five players on-court, but as I've read from other users, you can't always register the subs quickly. The advantage of an actual book with pen/pencil is you can see everyone at the same time.

2. Limited statistical categories. When I'm scoring the game, I only need to see points, free throws/attempts, and fouls. It's not necessary for me to record the location of a shot, the type of foul (hold, block, etc), the rebounder, and assists, etc.

3. Color coding the teams. This makes it quick to make sure I have the correct team selected. The less time staring at my screen, the more time my eyes are focused on the court.

4. Scorebook outputs. The other app generated PDF files in scorebook format, which was very helpful to print for the media, instead of trying to decipher handwriting. It also made it simple to email other members of the media and coaches as well. It also helps if there is a running score at the top, if timeouts can be recorded by game time, and team foul accumulation shown by player.

5. Editability. I'm human, I make mistakes. How easy is it to change fouls and/or scoring at the end of a game? Can it be done in scorebook view? Can we change uniform numbers in-game for players who need to change them due to blood or rips?

6. Format. Is there a version that I can use on my MacBook? Or is this a mobile-only app?

7. Can all games be customized at the start? I also work AAU games, and some of them have different rules, like 10 fouls for the bonus, 13 for double bonus. Many of the teams only give the scorers uniform numbers without names.

8. Is there a trial version I can test?

It seems that iScore has some of these, but not necessarily all of them...maybe I haven't read thoroughly. If the answer to all is yes, you have definitely earned another customer.

1. If you are using an iPad, you have access to the entire Roster now (this was included a few versions back). It means you will not be tracking minutes played for the players you don't have "on the court", and the "combo reports" only know about players on the court, but the capability is there.

2. You can record as little or as much of each play as you want. We do not require entering every detail.

3. We have color coding on the button bars so you can see the group of players the team is for

4. We have a clean PDF output for each game

5. You can edit every play post game to fix your mistakes. Jersey numbers can be changed at any time.

6. No - we do not support laptops. The app is intended for mobile devices (best experience with iScore Basketball is on the iPad)

7. We have many customization options (# of periods, length of periods, when fouls reset, etc). The "bonus" settings are not necessary to score the game... you just put the player at the Free Throw line whenever it is appropriate to do so.

8. Apple does not have a way of doing trial versions.

Other than MacBook support, iScore supports all of your requests right now.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Is there any possibility of a non-Mobile version at some point in the future? Or possibly a Google app for use in the Chrome browser? (similar to the Angry Birds app).

Do you have an example of a pdf output? All I saw on the tutorials page looked more like a spreadsheet, and most coaches and media I've encountered find it easier to read the typical scorebook version, and I know my state's athletic association would like something similar to that as well.

It is unlikely we will be creating a version for non mobile devices. The tablets and phones lend themselves very well to scorekeeping for any number of reasons, and a computer based (non touch screen) version would require a much different paradigm than what we have created.

If you send us an email to support@iscoresports.com asking for a sample of the iScore Basketball reports, we can send them to you.
