Ok so I was playing around more - and here's what I found - I have to go to each player and add them to the new "10U District" league. In some ways that makes sense - except I would think that it should be automatic if I add a league, then a game to that league that the players that play in the game...

Thanks Mark. It's quite a bit of clicking (adding each game one-by-one) but it works.

I still like the idea of supergroup (league).. Would allow quick access to things like "how did the team do in tournaments", or "how did the team do in june vs. july".
